How to get into xp even if you lost your password

February 25th, 2010

Ever been locked out of your machine and don’t have the admin password to get back in?

Here is a quick way that wont cost you a lot of money to get back into your machine.

Follow the following steps and you’ll be back in before you know it!

Put the Windows XP installer disc into the optical drive (CD/DVD) and restart your PC.

Press any key when prompted with “Press any key to boot from CD”, then wait for the “Welcome to setup” screen to appear, just press enter.

Then press F8 to agree on the license agreement.

On the next screen, you will be prompted to repair or install a fresh copy of Windows XP. You just need to select the locked Windows XP installation you want to enter (If you’ve more than one Windows XP installed) and press “R”.

The system will then reboot after setup checked the disk and copied setup files (Just wait for the system to reboot). And when it reboots, don’t press any key when prompted to “Press any key to boot from CD”.

The setup will be automatically start the setup process. This is the most important steps, you need to wait for the setup to install the devices. Press the combination of SHIFT+F10 when you see the words “Installing Devices” at the bottom of the shown remaining minutes of the setup to finish.

After that, a command console will be open, where in you need to type “NUSRMGR.CPL” (Without the quotes).

You will be then given access to the User Account window similar to the control panel where you will delete or edit your forgotten password. Choose remove if you need to enter the system without entering password or edit if you want to change your forgotten password.

After you delete or edit your account password, close the command windows and let the setup  finish. (You will also be needing to enter the XP product key if prompted)

When setup is finished,  it will reboot. If you deleted  the password it will just log you in automatically. If you changed the password you will need to enter the new one.

thanks to iblogall.com for the eaasy fix.

Youtube being used for presidential Q & A

January 26th, 2010

As our technology grows it is amazing to see some of the ways it gets implemented.   On Wednesday when the State of the Union address is being broadcast users can log on to you tube and ask the President questions directly.  Whether you are for him or against him it is nice in my eyes to see such a direct way of interaction with the Commander in Chief from everyday citizens.

The companies Citizentube will display the State of the Union address  and users can interact with Obama on that page.

more info can be found here.

It  is refreshing to see technology and the Internet being included in something as traditional as the State of the Union address.

Kodak Easyshare Wireless Picture frame a little to “easy”……

January 6th, 2010

Casey Halverson

Did you get on of those cool digital picture frames for Christmas?  The ones that let you see facebook status updates, tweets, news, flickr?  Well these cool gizmos also have an inherent security flaw built into them.  Luckily no one at Brenew received one of these this year!

When you go to the website that shows you how to configure your slide show and set up different settings based on the time of day and how frequent you want the photos to change there is a link that gives the feed address of your photo show.

A not so nice computer person can use this information to view any Kodak Easyshare Wireless Picture Frame purchasers pictures and even gives write access.  Examine those picture frames before giving to friends and family. someone could pre-load some inappropriate pics and have the password before you even purchase it.

Simply changing the last few digits on the web page will take you directly to another Kodak Easyshare users slide show.   were you can view the pictures they posted with ease.  I hope they get this fixed soon.

Facebook and Twitter predicted to be hackers #1 targets for 2010

December 30th, 2009

Be careful who you friend and what you click on when on social networking sites.  Here is an example of just what can go wrong. http://wokv.com/localnews/2009/12/supervisor-of-elections-falls.html

Mcaffee warns that Facebook and Twitter will be  the cyber-criminals platform of choice for 2010. They will use these sites for collecting personal information as well as sending viruses.  There is a simple thing you can do to minimize your exposure.  Don’t accept friend requests from people you do not know.

Social networking is a great concept but there are inherent risks that come along with it.   Protect yourself as you would in real life and you will be fine.  Read the terms of services for sights that help you with your social networking endeavors.  Some sites will ask you to upload your address book or invite friends.  These same sites use that info you provide, and sell it to 3rd parties.   Read the fine print and use common sense and you should be fine!

Please be careful opening any PDF files over the next few weeks.

virus alert

Do you use Adobe reader for reading pdf files?  The majority of our customers and friends do.  I ran across this article and thought I would share with you guys in case you were not aware.

Adobe confirms PDF zero-day attacks. Disable JavaScript now

Adobe  has a huge market share when it comes to Pdf editors and readers.  It has been around and is well known and this makes it a big target for hackers and those who profit from writing malicious code.

There are two pretty simple ways to avoid this exploit and other exploits that are similar to it.

The first thing you can do is use a different PDF reader.  There are other PDF readers out there and they work just as well and for somethings better than Adobe Reader.  At Brenew.com we tend to avoid Adobe Reader as a general rule.  One example of a free PDF reader that does not have the vulnerability would be Foxit Reader.

The second thing you can do is to disable javascript in Adobe Reader.  Follow these steps to disable javascript in Adobe:

  1. Open Adobe Reader, on the top menu bar click on edit
  2. Click on Preferences
  3. Click on Javascript
  4. Uncheck enable Acrobat Javascript

I know with the holiday season approaching you will get emails from old friends and family with attachments, be extra careful  about what your opening to keep you and your family’s data safe and secure!
